Board of Trustees
Our commitment to ensure quality and patient safety begins with our Board of Trustees. The board holds ultimate accountability for quality of care and services, and the systems and processes to support that care provided by physicians and staff of UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Board members receive regular updates and reports on quality across our organization.
Patient Care Assessment Committee (PCAC)
A subset of our board is our Patient Care Assessment Committee (PCAC), which includes six board members plus representatives from senior management and staff of our Quality and Patient Safety Department.
The PCAC oversees the development and implementation of programs to ensure maintenance and improvement of quality, safety and risk management. The board members are actively involved at the care level in evaluating our efforts.
Clinical Performance Council (CPC)
At the Medical Center, our Clinical Performance Council (CPC) is comprised of all our clinical department chairs plus senior management. This committee reports to the PCAC. The CPC oversees all the quality work at the Medical Center and its members are actively involved in the improvement projects.
Medical Center Patient Safety Committee (PSC)
The Medical Center Patient Safety Committee (PSC) is dedicated to improving and creating patient safety practices, reducing the probability of occurrences of adverse and potentially adverse events, and ensuring continuous regulatory compliance. It has members from all areas of clinical practice at the Medical Center. The PSC reports to the PCAC.
Department of Quality and Patient Safety
The Department of Quality and Patient Safety is at the center of the organization. Expertise in processes for clinical quality and patient safety and experience of care performance measurement and improvement.
This department works specifically in the areas of experience of care, clinical decision support, and project management for the organization and specific service lines, and in the area of regulatory compliance and patient safety.
Physician Quality Officers
Our Physician Quality Officers are specially selected clinicians who are trained in safety science. Physician engagement is key to improving clinical quality, patient safety and patient experience of care. They lead and participate in organization-wide performance improvement initiatives.
Physician quality officers are accountable to work directly with the medical staff to provide education and support changes that directly effect physician practice. They work collaboratively with members of the department of Quality and Patient Safety to lead and facilitate improvement initiatives.
Quest for Excellence Thursday
All staff participates in Quest for Excellence Thursday. We believe that providing safe care involves everyone at UMass Memorial and our commitment to providing the highest quality, safest and best patient experience brings nonclinical and clinical staff members from all areas together on the third Thursday of every month. We focus on ways of sustaining and improving our efforts around quality, patient safety and patient experience.
