Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The maternal-fetal medicine specialists at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester are dedicated to caring for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Some women require special high-risk medical care during pregnancy because of one of the following conditions:

  • Age over 35 years
  • Chronic medical illness (hypertension, heart disease, etc.)
  • Diabetes
  • Family history of genetic concerns
  • Multiple gestation
  • Pregnancy is not progressing as expected
  • Previous preterm delivery
  • Prior difficult pregnancy

UMass Memorial offers comprehensive services, including:

  • Antepartum testing for fetal well-being
  • Complete obstetrical care
  • Comprehensive obstetrical ultrasound, including fetal echocardiography and genetic ultrasound
  • Consultation before and during pregnancy
  • Diagnostic procedures (e.g., amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, umbilical blood sampling)
  • Genetic counseling

Our team is a multidisciplinary group of professionals including the only physicians with fellowship training in high-risk obstetrics in the region, along with nurses, social workers, dietitians, genetic counselors, ultrasonographers and translators.

Patients are assured easy and prompt access to high-risk pregnancy care 24 hours a day.

An important component of care for high-risk mothers is the availability of the region's internationally recognized Newborn Intensive Care Unit, located one floor above our Maternity Center. Our neonatologists and specially trained nurses care for premature infants and babies born with low birth weight and other conditions that require extended hospitalization.
